What They Don’t Tell You About Prom… PLUS PROM HACKS

IMG_4055

It is creeping up to that time of the year where all the ball gowns, heel and suits come out because not only does summer mean going to the beach or having a barbecue, because it is also prom season. I went to prom last year so because I experienced the whole routine I feel like I am overloading with information about prom and some tips and tricks. My prom experience was obviously different to everyone else’s and these are my own opinions. I will also add some photos of my prom so you can have a little look at those as well.

My opinion of prom is very mixed because my last exam was on the day of my prom so I had to zone in on that and then wait until after it had finished to really get excited about it. I feel like prom has such a big build up because I started looking for my dress in February and when it actually came around it seemed really weird. I actually found it quite stressful however I did really enjoy it. Might seem a bit weird but its true. However there are some things that I find you never really get told about prom so that is why I have decided to do a post about it.

Someone will have the same dress as you.

For my prom, ever since the beginning of the year all the girls on my school year had one big facebook group chat about prom where you could post a photo of your prom dress on there to make sure nobody had the same dress as you. I found this absolutely ridiculous and still do because there was so many horrible arguments in it about people getting ‘the same dress’. People are going to have the same dress as you, one girl had the same dress as me but because we had our hair done differently, we had different bags and shoes, and we didn’t really hang out together nobody noticed. Even if you have the same or similar dress to someone you are going to look beautiful in your different ways.

Getting ready as a group can be quite stressful.

I got reading on my own for prom. I went to a makeup artist during the day and my mum did my hair and I got ready at home. However from what I heard from some of my friends who all got their hair and makeup done and got ready together was that it was quite stressful. If you get your hair and makeup done in a group it is going to take a long time to get through everybody, so by the time the last person has had their makeup done, the person who got their hair done first found that it had already dropped out. I recommend getting ready by yourself and then meeting your friends at someone’s house. Less hassle, stress and heated conversations!

What you arrive in is mildly important.

Where I went to prom, those who had gotten there before you could stand on a big balcony and watch everybody else come in. I had a cute little convertible beetle which was fun, and one boy came on a motor bike which was followed by about 50 other motorbikes! You want to go luxurious or something unique because you only go to prom once and you can get some really good deals for transport.

Don’t spend a lot on your shoes because you won’t wear them the whole night.

Yes it is nice to splash the cash for a once in a lifetime opportunity but in reality if you are going to wear heels like I did, your feet will 100% be killing half way through the night. I ended up taking mine off because my feet were hurting so badly and a lot of other girls did too. I got a pair of heels which I could wear again to casual occasions and they were £40 so just think wisely because you don’t want to spend a lot on something you will only wear for 2 hours.

Get as many photos as you can.

The whole prom night can go so quickly it can be a bit of a blur. Get as many photos as you can because you will never want to forget this experience. Everyone is dressed up all nicely and there will be a professional photographer so own it!

After prom isn’t a big rave.

This is such a negative point and I am sorry ahaha but this is my personal experience. Prom and the lead up to it is a knackering process in itself. I left my prom at 11 ish and the idea was to go to my friend’s house were we would have a party and then sleep over. Normally the whole the whole year would have a party in someones field but nobody in my year was willing to host it because in all reality who would want to host a party to 400 teenagers?! By the time we had stopped at everyone’s house to pick up things they need we got to my friends house at 12:30, we had about one cider and we were all falling asleep!

I also have a few prom hacks which I learnt from my own personal experiences!

  • Wear a nude lipstick because you will be eating and you don’t want red or bright pink smudges across your face in your photos.
  • Wear your prom shoes around you house with a few pairs of socks on a few days before prom to wear them in.
  • If you are having your makeup done by someone else have a rehearsal because it could go horrible wrong!
  • If you are wearing fake nails take some nail glue with you… one of mine fell off within 5 minutes of getting there.
  • Take at least £10 because there will be a bar but drinks will be expensive.

I hope that this has helped. If you are going to prom this year I really hope you enjoy it and have a fab time!

  1. You looked amazing! Nobody from my school had the same dress as me, because all of them had theirs in navy, black or red. But me, as a real badass, got it in the most ridiculous colour, lol! I’ll have to do a blog post on it quite soon ahh xx

  2. Loved this!! I mean, mine was 10 years ago but it was stressful and exhausting – we skipped the after event and I slept until 1 the next afternoon. My mom thought I was sick. I did get to go with my high crush who had no idea that he was that to me. Sigh, this took me down all kinds of memory lanes. Thanks for that ❤
