There are so many beauty tips out there shared by millions of different bloggers, makeup artists or beauty enthusiasts but it can get a bit over whelming from the amount of hacks or tricks that are out there. You can hear some where you think “Actually that is genius” but you can also hear some where I find myself going “Why on earth would you think that, that is a good idea?”. Honestly some of the things I have come across are just down right bizarre – no offence if you have tried this but why put Nutella in your hair when you can just eat it instead?! Even if you think these tips seem good they might actually be more damaging or just pointless and therefore you are wasting your time when you could be reading some more useful tips.
I have decided to try and put an end to some of these strange beauty tips, however if you do use these tips and find them useful then go ahead! This is just my personal opinion.
1. “You can test a foundation colour on the back of your hand.”
This is one of the most common mistakes that everyone makes! Whether it is because you are in a rush when testing the foundations out or you don’t want to ask for help, testing foundation or concealer out on the back of your hand can cause you to pick the wrong shade and you don’t want to end up looking like a circus clown. I know for a fact my face is a completely different colour to my hand because my face doesn’t tan that well compared to the rest of my body.
2. “Use a spoon to help create a perfect winged liner.”
This went viral on YouTube and all over the internet, and like a lot of beauty lovers, I tried it out. I did not get what the fuss was about because every time I tried it I didn’t like the shape and once I moved the spoon away the eyeliner smudged. Personally I think it is just better to either use a bit of masking tape or to just practice, practice PRACTICE!
3. “You can’t use moisturizer if you have oily skin.”
In actual fact, not using a moisturizer if you have oily skin can make oily skin worse! You can get moisturizers suitable for oily skin, and it doesn’t make your skin seem more oily. It makes it worse not using a moisturizer because if your skin feels dry from not moisturizing, it will excrete more natural oils to stop the dryness. So moisturizing is super important no matter what type of skin you have.
4. “You have to wash your makeup brushes every few days to stop the build up of germs.”
I think I heard a YouTuber say this before however I was like whattt?! Yes, you have to wash your brushes often or else it will cause your skin to break out due to the lack of hygiene, however washing your brushes every two or three days can damage your brushes and they will start loosing their shape very quickly. The hairs on the brushes will start to fray or fall out too and you don’t want that when you spend your money on some nice new makeup brushes.
5. “Heating up your eyelash curlers will make your eyelashes look better.”
Heating up your eyelash curlers are actually really dangerous. You might think that like a curling wand for your hair, your eyelash curlers will work better when heated. I have even tried this technique before however you put eyelash curlers very close to your eyes and if it is hot enough you can burn yourself!
6. “It is best to wash your hair everyday.”
Like I have mentioned in a previous blog post of mine, washing your hair everyday because you think it looks greasy is actually bad for your hair. It gets rid of all the natural oils in your hair and therefore makes your hair greasier, so if wash your hair every other day or every three days then you will find your hair to look better.
7. “You can’t wear bold lipstick and bold eyeshadow at the same time.”
This is absolute rubbish! I am a firm believer that you can wear what makeup look you want, a bit like you should express yourself with your clothing any way you want and not feel judged or embarrassed because you never know you could be setting the next new trend!
8. “Makeup sponges are better than makeup brushes.”
This is really down to your personal preference and you shouldn’t believe someone who says this because its not down to them to make your mind up about something. Try them both out and decide yourself. I personally do believe makeup sponges are better than makeup brushes for foundation and concealer, however some people prefer brushes and at the end of the day they do the same job!
