• How To Start A Blog People Will Read

    IMG_6898
When starting out a blog, I don’t think anyone actually realises that nothing happens over night. Soz, but you don’t just get 1000s of followers or readers instantly. It takes a while… A long while. I have very nearly 5000 followers (if you haven’t followed yet then I will love you forever if you do) and I get roughly 200 page views a day, but that changes every day. They are not the best stats, but they are better to when I started and for me that’s a huge achievement.
If you want to have a successful blog then the most important thing in my opinion is patience. It takes years to maintain a blog that you can call your full-time job. I admit I thought it would be A LOT easier than it looks… all blogger think that at the beginning so your aren’t alone!
However if you want to get your blog out there then I do have some tips that will help you gain views and followers faster. The blogging industry is growing bigger each day, and it staggers me how many bloggers there are out there doing the exact same thing as me. So how can you make your blog stand out?

    Be Yourself

Nothing is better than reading a blog post and really sensing someones personality shine through. Being you and making your post chatty makes it easier for an audience to connect with you and feel like they are involved in a conversation. These to me are the best blog posts to read when you need cheering up, need to get something off your mind, or a good bed time read. Change words to the way you say them, emphasizing different words, using underlining or italics, can change the way your post sounds when it is read. At the end of the day who doesn’t like a good cuppa and a chat?

    Photography Helps A Lot

You can just go back to my old posts and tell I sucked at photography, it makes me cry a little inside of embarrassment looking back on it. When I say ‘Photography Helps A Lot’ I really mean good photography. It is a skill that can seem complicated to master, but it is actually pretty simple. Take your time and learn about it, and it will come naturally. One thing that draws me to most of the blog post’s I read is the photography. A good photo can show professionalism and that you know what you are doing. I don’t half the time and sometimes I have extremely bad photo days but do you get where I am coming from??

    Short and Snappy Titles

Catchy titles draw a lot of views to a post. Thinking of a good title can be hard and most of the time I write it after I have written my post. When you think about it trying to summarize your whole blog post down to 7 words and make it look attractive is a mammoth of a task. Use flattering words, make the reader seem like they will get something out of the post, and try not to go over 10 words. The longer the title, the harder it will be to find on search engines on google. For example instead of ‘Amazingly Delicious Chocolate Brownie and Marshmallow In A Mug Recipe Recipe’ I went for ‘Dreamy Brownie In A Mug’. Talking about that I really want one now….

    Make Your Own Content

Sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes posts that every blogger in the universe seems to be doing can be less popular in terms of views. People can get bored with them and not want to read them. You can get the absolute classics like monthly faves which are a brill post, but others like when new weird and wacky trends come out can get a little same-y. Think outside the box, and make something that people might not have read before.

    Your URL is Essential

When I started my blog, I had the free wordpress account and my URL was www.emilyclarebeauty.wordpress.com. Long right? Hard to say in one breath right? Yes. And people won’t remember it. Most free sites will have the little insert in the URL’s and it is totally worth paying to get rid of it. You pay annually, I know WordPress is £15, and you can have whatever URL you like. It makes your blog so much easier to find on the internet and it helped me MASSIVELY.
I hope this blog post has helped in one way or another, and that you can take these tips whether you are just starting a blog or whether you want to drive traffic to your site.

I don’t know… how long did it take you to reach your first 1000? Or at least 500 followers? How many months/years/posts? I’ve started a blog in June I guess and still got nowhere near those numbers.

I just reached a 1,000 followers and I started my blog back in 2016, in late May so it takes a while, don’t give up, keep going and if you love doing it, the people will follow! 💖

It took me 8 months roughly to reach 1000 followers. It does take a lot of time

Some very helpful points here! I’ve been thinking of moving from the free wordpress account to the paid version but wasn’t sure if it was worth the move. Think I need to plan it properly and take the leap! X

5000 followers, that is amazing! I am trying to tip 1000 right now. I have been working a lot on my photography and need to get better at flat lays. I have been much happier with my posts though, now that I try to only post pics taken on my DSRL versus on my iphone!

      • 20/10/2017 / 5:40 pm

Try and comment on other blogs (like you have done here) and just leave your URL in the comment too and you will fly past 1000!

Was getting rid of the WordPress.com jusr paying an extra charge with the WordPress plans? Because I’m worried to do it because I don’t want the hassle of going self hosted, I love the community with WordPress 🙈

      • 20/10/2017 / 5:39 pm

What do you mean hun?? You can either pay £15 a year for the URL but everything else stays the same, or you can upgrade you plan and it is included

        • 20/10/2017 / 5:41 pm

I don’t want the .wordpress.com in my url anymore but the WordPress plan that includes a custom domain is £85 for a year which is so expensive, does WordPress offer a plan for just a custom domain for £15? do you know? xx

I loved this post Emily, and totally agree that the best thing you can do when you start a blog is be yourself. That’s the reason why I rarely get fed up with it, because I’m just writing out my thoughts, feelings and experiences! xxx

This is such a great post, thank you for the tips! I know that you are super busy but if there is any way that you could take a 60 second look at my blog and let me know your initial thought, I would be very grateful. I am still trying to develop my skills in this area and insights from someone such as yourself would be very helpful. Thank you in advance and keep up the great work!

    21. 24/10/2017 / 7:47 pm

Love love the post! I’m so glad I stumbled across your blog when I started mine initially. You are always so inspiring and creative.
I feel blogging is a full time job, it’s definitely not something you can master overnight and really tests ones patience! I am almost at 100 followers and I can see my stats have good and bad days every now and then.
One thing that really helped me get more views recently, I made a facebook page for my blog so that kept directing people to the blog to read the post. Although I got no new followers from there, my views went through the roof! Hahah, hoping to get some follows soon!!
      xx
